The GPS Girl’s Directions for Recalculating in Business

Imagine you are working on a project that is going nowhere. You come into the office every day and there seems to be no point continuing along the path you are headed. Then your team leader tells you the project must be completed, because it would look bad to make changes at this stage.

What does the environment reveal? It’s abounding with low morale, low energy, and an air of resignation.

Sometimes things don’t go as planned. We can hold our breath and ride out a situation that isn’t working, or we can lead powerfully by Recalculating.

The GPS Girl's Directions for Recalculating in BusinessRecalculating in business is being able to let go of what did or didn’t work and to course correct throughout our business day or a long-term project.  Being able to be flexible in a constantly changing marketplace not only gives organizations an edge, but also builds momentum and increases productivity. Recalculating drives performance.

The following are my top 10 tips for how to implement a route change – to recalculate yourself in business and to get you on the right track for producing greatness – whether for a client, a project, or among a team.

1. Notice You Are Off Route

When we are leading an organization, in an ideal world, we want to follow through on the decisions we make. Changes are happening at record speed in the marketplace. Becoming aware of the plan we made is no longer serving the company, is the first step to Recalculating. Simply noticing we are off route gives us the power to make new decisions.

2. Be Willing To Recalculate

After we have noticed we are off route, perhaps the most important aspect of Recalculating is being willing to make a change. It takes courage to Recalculate and make a detour around a roadblock. It may seem like the easier option to continue toward a destination that no longer makes sense. This is only because the steps are taking place and the team is already headed in that direction. When you know this is not serving the best of your people, listen to your Inner GPS and Recalculate.

3. Look Towards Your Destination

Once there is a willingness to recalculate, look towards the desired destination. Re-presence yourself and your team to the outcome you are working toward, and zoom out to the satellite view. When things don’t go as planned checking in with where we want to be headed is like reading the signposts. Then you will be ready to…

4. Put Yourself in the Driver’s Seat

Giving ourselves, and our team, the permission to be in the driver’s seat empowers and inspires energized action. Once management has made it clear the new direction is serving the needs of the organization, your people can move forward confidently, building momentum.

5. Take a Step in the Direction of Your Destination

The true power of Recalculating is action. When we can let go of what did or did not work and continue to take steps in the direction of our ultimate outcome we increase productivity.

Encouraging a recalculating culture leads to increased enjoyment in the experience of working on a daily basis. A happier and more productive team leads to a happier bottom line. Simply put, Recalculating drives performance.

Recalculating in business is crucial to fostering positive and benefit-producing change. Being able to let go of what did or didn’t work and to course correct in business or on long-term project builds momentum, increases productivity, and bolsters the overall confidence of a team.

Embrace the ability to “recalculate” to give yourself, your team and your organization edge – and the aptitude and confidence to execute maybe not the first plan, but the right plans for a given situation. Recalculating drives performance.
