The GPS Girl’s Essential Roadmap for Marketing in Today’s World

The GPS Girl's Essential Directions for Marketing in Today’s World

Having a clear plan of direction for your day, week, month, even the year ahead, just makes good sense both in business and life in general.

Where marketing is concerned, having a path to follow that leads to a desired outcome is essential in this ever-changing and fast developing business world. To stay ahead the ability to recalculate on the go can give you and your company an edge.

Here is a “Recalculating” Roadmap for marketing that highlights essential business marketing know-how’s from The GPS Girl®.

1. Choose a Direction

What we focus on expands and taking the time to really think through the outcomes we want from our marketing plan, is step 1.

What is the satellite view? Where is your company headed in one, five, even ten years? What legacy do you want to leave?

Having a big picture makes the direction crystal clear. In my own business, I regularly take time out to plan where I’m headed and then schedule time once a week to review that plan.

2. Create a Road Map

Once you are clear on the ultimate and desired outcomes, it’s time to Write. It. Down.

Create a Road Map – a living, breathing document that will change and develop. Creating this in great detail isn’t necessary, but the more detail we bring to our road map, the more of a focus we give our mind.

Setting a timer for 15 minutes and writing everything that comes to mind is a great way to start deriving the steps you need to take to get to your ultimate destination. Writing it down is a phenomenal step, but the real power is in looking at this Road Map (and in this case your Marketing Plan) every morning. This brings what is important into immediate focus.

I recently developed my new web TV series, Navigating New York, and reviewing the action steps I need to take to market the new show keeps me on track on a daily basis. Having a Road Map for my marketing plan and social media strategy gives me confidence and the experience that I am headed in the right direction.

3. If You Take a Wrong Turn – Recalculate

Writing out a plan does not mean you are married to the plan. It is a starting point. You can change it any time, and that is the beauty of recalculating. I believe we can recalculate at any time in life or business just as we can when driving.

You hear “Recalculating” on the GPS and you may have taken a wrong turn, but by the time you hear that word, you are already back on track. Recalculating could also be defined as “refocusing”. It’s an opportunity to look honestly at where we are and to check to see if the actions we were planning to take will get us to where we want to be headed. We can have business developments we didn’t expect.

After 15 years in the music business, 1 voice-over job opened up a world of possibility for me. My speaking voice ended up in over 100 million GPS units, and it became clear I had a brand waiting to be developed. As new information comes to light, having the courage to recalculate helps us build momentum.

4. Promises, Promises

Now that you have a plan, do what you say you are going to do. When we make promises to others and do not keep them, it chips away at our opinion of ourselves (let alone the potential damage to your relationships).

People love to do business with those they know, like and trust. When we trust ourselves to do what we say we are going to do – by setting ourselves up to win with a marketing plan we intend to execute – everyone wins.

If you do not keep a promise to yourself, make a mental note, let it go, then vow to make promises you CAN keep going forward. This is a powerful practice. If your plan is way beyond what you believe you will do, simplify it immediately.

5. They Say It’s All About Relationships, Because It Is

I’ve been in the entertainment business for over 25 years, and it’s the people in my life who consistently refer business my

You’ve heard before “it’s all about relationships”. That’s because it is. When you genuinely care about the people in your life, they know it, and everyone’s experience is elevated.

Be certain all the people in your life know exactly what services you provide. This is not to sell yourself to them, but to ensure their powerful potential to refer business your way, is realized. When your family members and the people in your community know exactly what your business offers, they can make connections that count effortlessly.

When you take time out to create a strategy, be crystal clear about the direction you are headed and create a written Road Map. This step-by-step and day-by-day plan will keep you moving forward.

Create a plan you are truly enthusiastic about and know you can always recalculate (daily if necessary), and celebrate when you reach your destination!
