Women in Business: Putting the Right People in the Right Positions

In a recent appearance on Bloomberg, I discussed women in the C-Suite and how businesses should be doing more to put the right people in the right positions.

Putting the Right People in the Right PositionsI’ve been an advocate for this for years, and it’s great to see that we’re making headway. But businesses can do more. Regardless of sex, creed, or orientation businesses should be looking for the right person for the job. It’s that mindset that makes up high-performance teams who are aligned and are going towards one common goal.

In a meeting room I had changed the clock and waited. When people filed in, they complained about the clock being off. They wanted to form a committee to fix the clock. Then a woman stood up, stood on a chair and fixed the clock. I promoted her the next day. It’s people like that that you want on your team. Clock changers, people who will get the job done.

A brand is nothing more than a promise delivered, and if your team isn’t cohesive, you’re failing as a leader. Great teams can anticipate problems, trust one another, and can deliver.

They respect each other, which is the most important.

Great leaders understand the value in creating a great high-performance team. To do this, they put the right people in the right position. Ignore the societal norms. How is that working out for those businesses anyways? C-suite leaders have the perfect opportunity to lead by example. Promote the right person, regardless of differences. Create advocacy groups and become an integral member. Celebrate differences rather than letting them become barriers.

Because if we were all the same, how boring would that be?
