Unique Approaches to Going Green
Natural environments are the original incubators of creativity and innovation. Retreating to wild places in search of clarity and focus is a proven habit of great leaders. From Moses on the mountain and Jesus in the desert to Buddha beneath the Bodhi tree, nature’s ability to inspire paradigm shifting thought is well documented.
Science is now proving what we have always known. Hectic, noisy lifestyles and constant demands can result in a forgetful, distracted, mentally flighty condition called brain fatigue (sound familiar?). Studies like this one demonstrate that a simple anecdote to distraction and lack of focus is a walk in the park. Simple, free and effective, daily saunters in green spaces have supported the success of leaders like Henry Ford and Albert Einstein.
How else can leaders get green without leaving town?
- Get a Plant: Additional research suggests that introducing desk plants, a tiny taste of nature, improves workers’ attention, satisfaction and focus.
- Meet Outside: Meeting hygiene is a popular subject and prescriptions for more effective and efficient meetings include meeting outside.
- Get Some Awe: Awe-inspiring experiences have been shown to expand our sense of time and increase feelings of wellbeing. Sunrises, sunsets, spring blooms; opportunities surround us if we take time to look.
Earth Day is the perfect time to sprout greener habits. Now more than ever, business leaders have to look beyond the boardroom to find clarity and focus. For those willing to challenge themselves to unplug, leave the built environment and explore greener pastures (especially wild ones) there will be no doubt that the cure for distraction lies just past the doorstep.
