What to Do After an Exit: From Founder to Mentor

What to do after an exit featured image

You’ve done the work. You’ve built the company, navigated the challenges and made it through your exit. Now you’re facing a question most successful founders never see coming: What’s next?

The Post-Exit Challenge No One Warns You About

After selling your business, the initial relief gives way to something unexpected. You have time, freedom and a wealth of knowledge, but no outlet for it.

You’re too experienced to start from scratch, too energized to step away entirely and too seasoned to waste your hard-earned lessons. What if there’s a path that leverages everything you’ve learned without the operational burden you’ve already carried?

Traditional Path Why It Falls Short
Consulting Requires rebuilding infrastructure and constantly chasing clients
Board Positions Limited engagement and narrow impact across organizations
Full Retirement Leaves your best years and sharpest insights unused
Another Startup Pulls you back into operational stress you have already outgrown

The Chair Role: Executive Coaching at the Highest Level

Becoming a Vistage Chair is reserved for accomplished executives who’ve carried P&L responsibility, led through uncertainty and solved the challenges today’s CEOs face.

As a Chair, you facilitate monthly peer advisory groups of 12-18 CEOs from non-competing companies. You provide one-on-one executive coaching. You guide strategic problem-solving at the highest level, without operational fires, HR drama or cash-flow stress. You focus on pure strategic thinking and leadership development.

From Success to Significance: Real Founders Who Made the Shift

After an exit, many founders discover that financial freedom does not answer the deeper question of what comes next. These leaders weren’t ready to slow down or return to full-time operations. Instead, they looked for work that matched their experience, protected their independence and delivered real meaning.

Their stories show how the Vistage Chair role creates a path from success to significance.

Ola Sage: From $40 Million to Making an Impact

After running a government professional services business for nearly two decades, Ola Sage sold in 2018. Nine months later, unable to sit still, she launched her Vistage practice.

“After my exit, I was advised to be careful about making major decisions too soon,” she says. “That didn’t last long.”

Today, Sage Chairs multiple groups while running two other businesses. The difference? Her Chair practice represents work she wants to do in retirement.

“As a Chair and a member, my Vistage experience has been like having an open MRI,” she explains. “It reveals who you are and creates an opportunity for personal discovery and growth as a leader.”

Her advice to exiting founders: “What are you retiring to?”

Randy Fields: 30 Years in Distribution, Now Guiding 180 CEOs

Randy Fields built medical implant distribution companies for 3 decades. After selling his second company in 2007, he struggled with the same question: What now?

A fellow CEO recommended “Halftime” by Bob Buford—a book about shifting from success to significance. The concept resonated, but Fields didn’t know how to apply it.

Five years later, during a one-to-one meeting with his Vistage Chair, the lightbulb went off: “Why don’t you become a Chair?”

Since 2013, Fields has guided 8 groups totaling 180 members. Eight member companies in his groups have sold for more than $470 million.

“It’s thrilling to have the ability to impact people’s lives,” he says. “God has placed me to do this work. I love what I do and don’t consider it to be work.”

Fields’ post-exit reality: “I work really hard 3 weeks a month, and my lovely wife and I travel one week every month to see our grandbabies. I have 16 weeks of vacation. That’s pretty cool.”

Jess Hartmann: From Tech CEO to Master Chair in 18 Months

After 13 years leading ProMAX Systems, Jess Hartmann faced market changes that limited reinvestment opportunities. He felt too young to retire but didn’t have the energy to rebuild another company.

When his Chair suggested executive coaching, Hartmann had one fear: “I’m not a salesperson.”

Despite his concerns, he enrolled in Chair Academy in late 2017. By March 2018, his first group launched with 12 members.

Today, Hartmann runs 5 groups serving 99 members. He’s developed partnerships with the University of Louisville for leadership programs and has graduated 90+ emerging and advancing leaders.

“When I was running a business, I was only focused on building that one business,” he reflects. “Now, at the end of the week, after great interactions and a couple of great ‘aha’ moments from my members, I get that tingle inside, that great feeling that something huge was accomplished.”

Hartmann’s perspective shift: “I enjoy life and see the impact of what I do every day. I don’t hold this feeling of what’s coming at me next. Now, I look at the day and say, ‘Hopefully, I had an impact on someone today.’”

Why Chairs Choose Vistage Over Going Solo

Many executives explore independent coaching first but quickly discover how difficult it is to build a sustainable practice on their own. The Vistage platform removes that friction by giving Chairs the structure, credibility and support they need to succeed

Category Vistage Chair Model Independent Coaching
Proven Methodology 65-year issue-processing model, tested group dynamics systems and structured accountability frameworks that consistently produce results Build your own coaching model from scratch with trial-and-error and no proven system to rely on

Support and Development Chair Academy provides intensive skill development in facilitation, coaching and business development No formal training ecosystem; learning and refinement depend entirely on your solo effort
Infrastructure Marketing, admin and back-office functions handled so you can focus on coaching and group leadership Must manage all marketing, operations, billing and admin tasks on your own
Professional Community Access to a global Chair community, shared resources, proprietary research and continuous learning Operate alone with limited collaboration or peer support
Practice Stability A local practice with 12–16 long-tenured members (average 5 years), creating dependable recurring income and fewer recruiting cycles Short-term client engagements; constant prospecting required to maintain income
Value Delivered to Clients Ability to offer peer advisory, Fortune-500-grade resources, annual valuations, strategic planning tools and multi-program pathways (CE, KE, VI, etc.) Limited to what you can personally develop or afford; fewer scalable tools for client impact

What it Takes to Become a Chair

The Chair role isn’t for everyone. With only 1,300 Chairs worldwide, it’s reserved for executives who’ve demonstrated:

  • 10+ years of executive experience with P&L responsibility exceeding $5M
  • Leadership of 25+ people with strong business acumen and high emotional intelligence
  • Executive presence demonstrated through confidence, maturity and assertiveness
  • Genuine passion for mentoring others and helping executives succeed
  • Availability and drive to build your own coaching practice

Current or recently retired CEOs, business owners, and C-suite executives with entrepreneurial attitudes are a good fit.

Your Practice, Your Terms, Your Legacy

As a Vistage Chair, you design a coaching practice that fits your life while creating impact that reaches far beyond the CEOs in your group. You operate independently, with support from a proven platform that helps you build a business that generates sustained income well into retirement.

What This Looks Like in Practice
Facilitate full-day monthly sessions with up to 18 CEOs Conduct one-to-one coaching with each member Build and develop high-caliber peer groups with Vistage support Structure your schedule around your life priorities Invest about seven business days per month per group

When you help a leader clarify their thinking and navigate complex decisions, the ripple effect improves entire organizations and communities. Every CEO you coach influences dozens of others: colleagues, staff, customers, partners and family members. This is what significance looks like after success.
