My business experience

In 1998, I founded Pacific Rim Resources, a boutique management consulting and direct investment firm, focused on developing strategy, marketing and acquisitions for multinational corporations entering the China market. The business grew to have operations in San Francisco, Shanghai and Seattle. After selling the company, in addition to my Vistage work, I have served on the board of a NYSE company and gained experience in corporate governance, audit and finance, and compensation under Sarbanes-Oxley. I remain on the board of Javelin Investments, a China-focused management consultancy.

During my career, I was a general partner with the Asia Opportunity Fund, a $250 million private equity fund. I was also a journalist and have worked under contract to the U.S. State Department.

My Vistage experience

I chair three Vistage groups (two Chief Executive and one Key Executive). Together with my members, we have supported each member of the group to build and sustain high value in their businesses while shining a light on the importance of maintaining a balance with their personal lives.

Our Vistage groups are forums in which each member asks probing questions; gets the best answers; focuses on their strategic vision; offers resources and supports; and listens actively. We also know how to have a good party.

My Vistage groups

Each of my groups has its own character. What all three groups share is a commitment to high performance, accountability and non-judgmental support. The members of each group have diverse interests and backgrounds, but share a passion for excellence, self-improvement and being the best they can be.

One of my Vistage groups has chief executives of high-growth companies in industries, including food products, software, technology, marketing, accounting, construction, branded products, energy, entertainment and visual effects. A number of CEOs in the group have transitioned from one company to a second CEO position during their tenure. As a result, the range of revenue for these companies runs from start-up to $200 million. The group has been together for almost five years and is most interested in new members who share their passion for growth.

My second Vistage group has chief executives of stable and growing companies. A number of these members are in the food and consumer-related industries. There are also providers of professional services and other service groups. The group includes several family-owned but hired CEOs, family-owned and run firms, companies purchased by MBA-trained entrepreneurs and owner-operated businesses. This group is a great fit for leaders ready to be challenged and supported by their peers.

Members of the Key Executive group are key executives from companies with CEOs from the other two Vistage groups. These individuals are looking to continue to develop and grow as professionals to both support their current CEOs and prepare themselves to take on more responsibility.

Who is the “ideal” Vistage member?

The ideal Vistage members is a leader in his or her organization who understands that there is an opportunity to become better at what they do—and has the confidence to offer advice and seek support on becoming a better leader. We look for individuals who can commit to learning and development, and are willing to listen to others. We look for members who can leave their egos at the door and fully participate. We are most interested in members looking to grow their businesses, either for scale, exit or other reasons.

Traits of our ideal member include:

  • Focused
  • Resourceful
  • Creative
  • Honest
  • Curious
  • Experienced
