The Master Plan - 3 Critical Steps to Family Business Ownership Transition

10 million businesses will need to transfer ownership over the next 10 years – that’s nearly 1 in every 3. This will be the greatest business transition we've seen in our nation's history! Is your company in that number? Is it ready for transition? Can the business fund your next chapter? Do you even know what the next chapter looks like or what it will cost? Here's what you need to know...

  • Only 25% of all businesses that go up for sale, actually sell. That’s just 1 in 4
  • Only 30% of family businesses successfully transfer from 1st generation to 2nd generation
  • Only 12% of those businesses successfully transfer from 2nd generation to 3rd generation
  • And only 3% succeed from the 3rd generation to 4th generation

How can you beat the odds? Please join us to learn about "The Master Plan" and how it enables business owners to de-risk and maximize opportunities through three steps: Strategic Growth, Owner Financial Certainty, and Defining the Next Chapter.

Morning Breakout | Critical thinking and systems of denial

Location/Time: | 10:50 AM – 12:00 PM

Presenter: Kevin Dixon, Deputy Director, United States Army War College, Outreach and Advancement

For better or worse: we are all products of our experience. When confronted with challenging circumstances, we use heuristics—“rules of thumb” derived from professional experience—to make decisions. This behavior often results in cognitive bias, and this failure to effectively, comprehensively provide assessment; can stifle innovation. This breakout session will help you to determine your own leadership tendencies and pet logical fallacies, providing six ways to overcome institutional systems of denial so you may achieve—and sustain—competitive advantage.

Morning Breakout | Who's minding your narrative

Location/Time: | 10:50 AM – 12:00 PM

Presenter: Harry Leach , Colonel, United States Air Force, Retired

For successful leadership, it is imperative to define your organizational narrative, before the influence of disruptive technology defines you. In his presentation, Harry Leach will provide the tools to decide not only what your narrative is—and you may have more than one—but to understand from where such narratives are derived, with an awareness of your own cognitive biases. Leave empowered to assign priority and responsibility, and choose where the buck stops. As Winston Churchill famously said, “History will be kind to me, for I intend to write it myself”.

Morning Breakout | Are you getting this?

Location/Time: | 10:50 AM – 12:00 PM

Presenter: Lauren Schieffer , International Speaker and Author

The greatest hindrance to growth in any organization is poor communication—both up and down the ladder. How well your team embraces your decisions, depends entirely on how effectively you communicate them. This session steeps down the core competencies of communicating before, during, and after the decision-making process. Understand the toxic results of poor communication, and hone three higher level communication skills to garner personal influence in any environment; especially those wherein hard decisions have to be made and executed.

Location/Time: | 12:00 – 1:20 PM

Presenter: Mark Russell, Griffin Financial Group, Vistage Supporter, and Ed Renenger, Stevens & Lee, Vistage Supporter

The President and the GOP-controlled House and Senate have promised comprehensive tax changes in the coming months. Broadly, they plan to:
    • Decrease rates (corporate, individual and pass-through)
    • Expand the base (i.e., limit individual and business tax deductions)
    • Incent capital expenditures by allowing up-front tax write-offs
    • Modify elements of the estate and gift tax
These changes are expected to have a favorable impact on the ability of shareholders to achieve tax-efficient liquidity. We will discuss some of the proposed changes and related uncertainty and their impact on:
    • ESOPs and other tax-deferred savings plans
    • Mergers and acquisitions
    • Business succession and transition strategies
    • Dividend recaps
